Planetakis
Out of the Club Into the Night
2008 » Sheridan Square Records
German electro duo Planetakis would not be out of place ushering underfed, black-coffee-fueled models down the runway at a high-profile international fashion show with their universally friendly digital pulses and honey smooth vocals. Out of the Club Into the Night is nothing spectacular as far as eurodisco is concerned; the accompanying press packet describes them as an amalgam of Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Ladytron, and The Clash yet the music is surprisingly original and the long list of comparisons only sells the duo short. If anything, there's a definite New Order approach to song construction, but not enough to render the sound derivative. At just over 40 minutes in length, Out of the Club is sugary enough for tearing up your favorite dance floor and legitimate enough to make it into regular rotation on your selectively-programmed music player, especially tracks "Money Sex and Alcohol" and "Pogo in the Shoes of Kylie Minogue," the latter of which could easily make its way onto the next American Eagle or Forever XXI in-store compilation. - Aubrey Bramble
