Phosphorescent
Pride
2007 » Dead Oceans
Athens, GA veteran folkist, Matthew Houck, assures us his third LP is definitely not Monday morning music. Then again caffeine and Phosphorescent never really did mix, and if you are ever in a highly kinetic state, avoid this album. Phosporescent possesses Simon and Garfunkle harmonies that cover you like a wool sweater on a frozen January eve, only to scratch you to death in the heat of a July afternoon. This is a an album, that by its very nature, makes it hard be accessible. For example, the title track itself is just a constant six minute choral, human a capella . . . in jungle form. Seriously. Try bopping to that tune in your Kia during rush hour. Yet, Houck constructs each track out of compassion and warmth that, at moments, is a triumph against today’s age of instant gratification pop and rock; “Cocaine Lights,” being a ethereal blurry ballad that raises your soul as high as any choir hymn. Just be to sure have the patience of a Tibetan monk before playing. – Michael Rabinowitz
