Iron and Wine
The Shepherd's Dog
2007 » Sub Pop
One-man band Sam Beam of Iron & Wine is releasing his best record yet on September 25. The Shepherd’s Dog blends the best of his previous albums and collaborations into one evolved musical accomplishment. It’s a quiet retreat telling the stories of the seasons along the countryside set against nostalgic refrains. It’s soft, humble and ambitious as it reflects the new surroundings of family man Beam from Miami to the hills outside of Austin. Originally from South Carolina, Beam carries the essence of the Cackalackys in his music, intentionally or not. The Shepard’s Dog is lyrically and musically thematic with continuous tender folk and musical layering that accompanies his following of the natural order (and absence) of things from animals, trees, family and the sea. Listening to it feels like I’m home. It might be a snoozer for some, but for me, it reminds me to relax and enjoy the tranquility of being. - Stephanie Bolling
