Somehow, Field Music managed to make a sneaky album of prog-rock. The whole thing is chock full of syncopated, mini-suite songs peppered with vocal harmonies, string arrangements, and the intermittent classic rock guitar riff. In other words, the perfect recipe for making an album of total shit. I’m not quite sure how they did it, but Tones of Home is actually a really good album, even with the bass guitar solo at the end of “In Context.” Part of the reason might be that all the songs are compressed into about half an hour worth of music, with most tracks in the neighborhood of three minutes so nothing ever has the time to get boring. And don’t let the “prog” fool you just because I couldn’t think of a better adjective—Field Music is decidedly indie. Nonetheless, this whole record comes off like a brilliantly orchestrated and focused batch of tunes.
