Division Day
Beartrap Island
2007
Division Day’s first full-length album is a perfect blend of unique sounds complimented by the most unusual lyrics of blood and insects. The album starts out strong with strange electric guitar riffs that introduce you to Beartrap Island. The second song on the album, “Ricky,” has a catchy, dance-pop tune from the 80’s; which makes you want to tear your sweater at the shoulder, scrunch those socks, and dance your heart out. This song also introduces you to the backbone of the entire album, Kevin Lenhart’s strong and intense drumming. His powerful beat carries you through songs like “Catch Your Death” and “Lights Out,” where midway through them, the white noise steps aside to reveal those drums. Halfway through the album, “Tigers” begins. Opening with, “I want your blood inside my head...” sung on top of fingers skipping over the keys of a keyboard. This song is the most preeminent of Beartrap Island. Each ingredient perfect complements each other: the drums, the bass and guitar, the keyboard, and frontman Rohner Segnitz’s soft, wispy voice. Division Day has successfully mastered the art of layering sound, and the end result is a masterpiece debut.
