Colette

Om Records presents music for Derek Zoolander. Colette likes moldy cheese, bubble gum, blow pops, and of course, male models. They are the four key elements of her 10-year-plus-regression of dance music. Her PR rep even suggested that she remedies Kylie Minogue’s “breathy” voice. In reality, Colette could only aspire to be her. I suppose I would not mind her as much if she was not promoted as such a pleasant kickback to 90s house, hip-hop, and electro. To be fair, there are two tracks on the album that can endure a brief listen: “Funny” (featuring Black Spade) is a poppy, fun song until Colette unnecessarily lays in on a fermata over “Niiiight” and “tooogeth-aaah.” Obviously Colette has practiced to Tina Turner’s “Private Dancer” repeatedly, and she could not quite hit the mark. Some of the tracks even begin with a good hook, such as the remix of “Funny” tacked on to the end of the album. As long as Colette’s voice is digitally manipulated with a soft echo, one could dance in a blissfully drunken stupor. Unfortunately, after a minute and a half, they shut the echo off and Colette pouts her glitter-pink lips all over the microphone. – Crystal Farina
