Bat for Lashes
Fur and Gold
2007 » Echo / Parlophone
I first discovered this group from ye ole YouTube. A buddy sent me a link to a clip he described as “David Lynch shoots Donnie Darko on BMX bikes” for the enchanting single “What’s a Girl to Do?” Haunted by the specter of Phil Spector’s production, and constructed from the opening bars of The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby,” I was immediately sucked in.
Pakistani-born chanteuse Natasha Khan is Bat for Lashes. Her brooding, introspective melodies call to mind many of her forerunners: Sinead O’Connor on album opener “Horse and I”, Bjork on the heady “Trophy”, and Tori Amos whose sparse piano and breathy vocal styling feel at home in “Tahiti”. Experimental yet accessible, fans of Siouxsie Sioux, The Knife & Kate Bush will be seduced by this budding new talent. – Marshall Dickson
