Music As Muse

Posted Tuesday, November 11th 2008 by Amy Beeman
I want to write but I have nothing to say. I’m blank, empty and everything I think of sucks. I’m writing, however, to say fuck you writer’s block. Fuck you with your great wall of nothing, with your big fat void in the face of millions of things that could be said. This simply cannot stand.

I saw some pretty great shows in the last couple of months, but neglected to write about any of it. I haven’t written how discovering Lauris Vidal inspired me to remember that inhibitions ruin art. That allowing vulnerability to shine through your medium makes people like what you’re doing more because they can relate because they’re human too.

I didn’t write about the tightness of Win Win Winter’s set at New World a while back, and how they looked like they were having so much fun that I, in turn, started to have a lot more fun (maybe the shot of Grand Marnier helped too).

Nor have I written about my fascination with Matt Butcher, whose slight frame and gaunt face shocks me a little, then he gets on stage and that gentle, steady voice comes out of him and he is all big eyes and soul, backed by an amazing collection of musicians. I tell you The Band themselves would be proud to hear MB and the Revolvers' cover of "I Shall Be Released." Talk about doing something justice - I got goosebumps.

Didn’t even write about the Beauvilles' performance at their CD release party at Crowbar some time back, when Shawn and the guys pulled off a couple of polished videos and followed them up with a bona fide rock 'n' roll show, complete with plenty of sweat and heart.

Watching all these guys own their craft makes me really proud of the Florida music scene, and happy to get to go see such stellar talent for a relatively low price in small, intimate venues. We have, in our midst, incredibly gifted musicians. If they keep it up, not only will they make Florida a more enjoyable place to live; maybe they’ll also help me out with this writer’s block thing.
