Weekend Bitch, 8/22-8/24

Posted Friday, August 22nd 2008 by Michael Rabinowitz

Weekend Bitch returns after a wary week in O-town. Who knew that shopping at IKEA, I-drive, and Cirque de Soliel could drain a person as much as Tropical Storm Fay?  Oy vey! Your weekend picks below:

Friday August 22:

Stone Temple Pilots @ Ford Ampitheater, 7:30, $39.50-$55. W/ Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. What can I say? Go for BRMC, stay for the train wreck. Will Scott Weiland fall back into the drum kit? (See video below.) Also, BRMC is limping along too, since firing their drummer (again). Check out my interview with BRMC guitarist, Peter Hayes.

Summer Birds In The Cellar @ The Atlantic, G'ville, 9 pm, $7/$9. W/ Deep Holy Sea, Oh Fortuna. One of my favorite O-town acts headlines the Swamp. Check out REAX's interview with Summerbird's guitarist, Curtis Brown.

Tinsley Ellis @ Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa, 8 pm, $10/$13.  W/3rd Stone Band.  Ellis is a premiere guitar king, while 3rd Stone is one of G'ville's finest funk acts with a 12-year-old on lead guitar. But be aware: He is one angry middle schooler, so please, no Jonas Bros. jokes!

Saturday, August 23:

Dish @ New World (photo above), Tampa, 9 pm, $7, 21 + . W/ The Wedding Party, The Tape Delay, Giddy Up, Helicopter! An outstanding collection of Central Florida's top young acts. I'm taking wave of the future shit here!  Very impressed with the country twang slide guitar of Wedding Party.

Creative Loafing Presents: In The Raw @ State Theater, 8 pm, $7/$5 with voter ID, all ages. W/ Geri X, Mike Bostino (of Tres Bien), Shawn Kyle (of The Beauvilles), Katherine Kelly (of Nous Rapport), Hat Trick Heroes. When not self-aggrandizing their own mediocre writing efforts, CL does a good job of promoting Bay area music in a creative promotional package. This time, the Loafers offer a unique "Unplugged" showcase of the area's best local talent.

Sunday, August 24:

Kinder, Gentler Sundays, or "Good Music Done Real Quiet Like," hosted by REAX editor/Nessie frontman Scott Harrell @ Crowbar, Tampa, 6 p.m., $3. W/ Will Quinlan (The Diviners), Geri X, J. Schultz (Military Junior), And the enigmatic ... Beachy Joe! Also, trivia and the return of the Bag O' Crap!

Weiland landing on the drum kit (1:20 mark) at Phoenix's Dodge Theater:

The Tape Delay were great. Rabi, you'd love them.
