Tony Loves Stacy's Mom, or Something
Who says middling rock stardom can't lead to cultural respectability? Adam Schlesinger, who, along with fellow songwriter Chris Collingwood, represents the core of genius pop-rock endeavor Fountains of Wayne, has been nominated for multiple Tony Awards (tm) for his contributions to the Broadway musical Cry-Baby. (Yes, it's based on what may be the worst, or at least the sanest, movie John Waters has ever made.) The noms include Best Musical and Best Score.
Schlesinger is already an Oscar (tm) and Golden Globe (tm) nominee, for writing the title track to the 1996 Tom Hanks (tm) comedy That Thing You Do. Cry-Baby is his first gig scoring for Broadway; hopefully, this won't keep him in the theater, and away from making a better FoW album than Traffic & Weather, for too long.
