The Offspring's First and Second Born to be Reissued

Posted Friday, May 16th 2008 by Scott Harrell

Hey, remember when you left the radio on, breathlessly counting the minutes until the next time they played "Come Out And Play"? (Hint: It was 37. Thirty-seven minutes.) Seems like a long time ago, right? Certainly longer than 13-odd years. Well, monolithic punk label Epitaph has decided it's been long e-freakin-nough, and will reissue the Offspring's 1994 monster breakthrough Smash - as well as the less successful yet infinitely superior '92 debut full-length Ignition - on June 17, the same day the group's latest effort, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace comes out.

No new bonus sonic material has been announced, but Smash will feature a 24-page booklet, likely full of anecdotes from semi-famous musicians about how all seven of the people in the room at that house party in Fullerton in '91 just knew the 'spring were gonna be huge.

I have a certain amount of respect for Dexter and Noodles and the boys - they seem to be fun, intelligent people, and "Self Esteem" was a perfectly serviceable tune. But designating the extremely timely Smash - which came out six months after Green Day's Dookie - a classic worthy of special reissue treatment seems a bit much; if anything, it might only serve to remind fans how ephemerally trend-oriented the aboveground punk scene has been since its mainstream arrival.
