San Francisco's Outside Lands - Photo Journal Day 3
Photos by Tony Landa
The first ever Outside Lands Music + Arts Festival may have started on a bit of a chaotic note on Friday, but Jack Johnson brought it to a peaceful close on Sunday night. Several thousand fans bailed out after Wilco's set and plenty of heady folks fizzled out after sets by Widespread Panic and then former (for now) Phish bassist Mike Gordon. A nice sized sea of people still rode it out with Jack. Throughout the weekend, crowds migrated from stage to stage as they followed their on schedules. On Sunday, however, many of the faces seen in the front row at the Twin Peaks stage when Stars began their set at 2:15 in the afternoon, were still there when Wilco finished things up at about 8:00 PM. Either their feet were just too tired from all that walking all weekend, or they just thought that Sunday's Twin Peaks Stage line-up (which also included ALO, Andrew Bird and Broken Social Scene) was enough bang for their buck.
Of course, there was a lot of other great music happening in Golden Gate Park that day. It would have been a crime to miss out on Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings or Rodrigo y Gabriela on the Lands End Stage in the Polo Field. Conveniently located on the way to and from the Twin Peaks Stage was the Panhandle Stage, which benefited from the traffic all weekend. It was a good spot for newer bands to get some exposure or for a band like Rogue Wave to continue building on to an already nicely established fanbase.
The best quote heard all day coming from any of the stages was when Torquil Campbell of Stars dedicated "Soft Revolution" to "Barack Obama, as long as you don't turn into a cocksucking motherfucker like the rest of them."
