News Of The Macabre: Ian Curtis' Tombstone Stolen

Posted Thursday, July 3rd 2008 by Michael Rabinowitz

I went to Paris last year and I visited the famous Pere-Lachaise Cemetary where Jim Morrisson's grave is.  I never understood the idolatry surrounding a stone slab.  What are people trying to gain from leaving flowers, or writing "this is the end, my only friend, the end"?  There is nothing there, besides dust, and more likely a pickled liver still moist from years of Jack Daniel consumption.  The whole concept behind the celebration of his grave is the sickest form of generational nostalgia.

Now we are entering another era of generational nostalgia.  I don't know what message Ian Curtis would give to the perpetrators of this crime.  Maybe something like, "Bollocks!"

Cheshire Police said the memorial stone was taken from where he is buried in Macclesfield Cemetery.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information on its whereabouts to contact them.

Detectives said the kerbstone, which has the inscription "Ian Curtis 18 - 5 - 80" and the words "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was taken sometime between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

A police spokesman said: "There is no CCTV in the area and there are no apparent leads as to who is responsible for the theft.

"This is a very unusual theft and I am confident that someone locally will have knowledge about who is responsible or where the memorial stone is at present."

Ian Curtis how I would like to remember him as:
