The Dresden Dolls at the Tampa Theatre - 01/10/08

Posted Friday, January 11th 2008 by Stephanie Bolling

For less than $30 on a Thursday night in Tampa, I couldn’t think of anywhere else I would have rather been. For what reason they chose to play in Tampa I do not know, but I am grateful to have experienced the live excitement that comes in watching the Dresden Dolls perform. It was their first time playing in Tampa and their second show ever in Florida. Opening acts were Two Ton Boa and Win Win Winter.

The set list with my commentary and pictures:

1.    In The Flesh - (Pink Floyd cover –see video)
2.    Girl Anachronism
3.    Missed Me (complete with Amanda and Brian’s theatrical dynamic)
4.    Sex Changes
5.    Mrs. O
6.    Gravity
7.    Glass Slipper
8.    The Gardener (Amanda plucked flowers from her keyboard décor and strew them throughout her path as she sang and walked the theater into the balcony crowd and back to stage)
9.    (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!) - (Beastie Boys cover - Prior to playing Amanda described the song as a traditional Yiddish song transcribed into electric and bass guitar. Chris (with his 5-inch heels) from Two Ton Boa joined while Amanda played drums and Brian sang. (See video)
10.   A Night At the Roses (see video)
11.   Coin-Operated Boy – (an obvious crowd favorite).
12.   Mandy Goes To Med School
13.   Astronaut  - (from Amanda’s solo album Who Killed Amanda Palmer?)
14.   Half Jack – (extended intro where Brian and Amanda played their hearts out)
Encore (Amanda came back drinking a Beck’s)
15.   Mein Herr (from the movie Cabaret)
16.   War Pigs (Black Sabbath cover) - Played on piano and drums - no guitar...and it worked!

They were incredibly friendly and unpretentious with fans. They allowed flash photography and even set up a table after the show to meet fans and sign memorabilia. They left an impression on us, and hopefully we on them, so I hope they come back again.

“In The Flesh” – Just a short snippet. I couldn’t sit still.

“Fight For Your Right” – Another brief snippet

“A Night At The Roses” – the tail end of it

Beautiful Review!

Stephanie, this totally captures the experience for those poor unfortunate souls who were unable to be in the room. An amazing recap of the escapades. A set list w/ song by song commentary? Video clips? A plethora of photographs?

Wow.

Kudos to you my dear, kudos!
