Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa

It was, oddly enough, the perfect night for an outdoor show, nice and cool for early September. I walked into Skipper’s Smokehouse excited for some quality, live music... and that’s exactly what I got.  Skipper’s was swarming with older hippies who made me feel right at home.  Big Daddy-O was halfway through his set by the time I got my drink and found a seat.  He was telling cheesy one-liners in between his songs, which had the crowd laughing hysterically.

By the time Tinsley Ellis took the stage, all those older hippies were gathered together in front of the stage ready for the blues.  Ellis was ready to play it for them.  He’s been playing the guitar since the age of eight, mostly inspired (and obviously so) by the greatest of them all, B.B. King.

Ellis’ soulful sound, expressed through his six-string, was refined and beautifully polished.  His band complemented him perfectly: from the notes that they played all the way down to the strands in their beards.  My favorite part of the show, however, was how very refreshing it was to see the older folk dressed in their tie-dyed shirts, carelessly dancing to Ellis’s psychedelic guitar riffs.

Big Daddy 'O' was an acoustic bluesman from Louisiana who had the sweetest voice. He was really good!!! From Marie's review it sounds like he's a comedian. I knew about how great Tinsley Ellis was and he didn't disappoint. He Rocked the house, but discovering Big Daddy 'O' that night was really cool. I bought one of his CD's and its wonderful. A great night of Blues. Thanks Skippers.
