Industry Profile: Ryan Immegart: VP, AR Volcom Entertainment
from volume 01 issue 06 // Michael Spadoni
REAX: How and why did you start Volcom Entertainment?
Ryan Immegart: Volcom Entertainment started in 1995 as a fluke really. I was 17 years old and looking for a way to put out my band theLINE's record. Simultaneously I was snowboarding for Volcom professionally and had some photo incentive money owed to me. I decided to ask Richard Woolcott (President/CEO of Volcom) if he would be willing to help fund recordings of my band. I suggested that we use my photo incentive money to record theLINE's album and Richard agreed. The label was born! Over the next few years Volcom Entertainment slowly evolved in to the full functioning record label it is today.
REAX: Are there any recent signings you're really excited about?
RI: There is some new stuff on the table that I am really excited about but the deals are not 100 complete so I cannot discuss any details at this time.
REAX: Have all the bands on your label found their way on there because of your open demo submission policy?
RI: We have signed bands that way but more often it's word of month that introduced us to new talent. Our current artists and colleagues have proven to be the best source of new talent. We respect them and their opinions, so when they say to check something out, we do.
REAX: What's going on with your band, theLINE?
RI: TheLINE has been on a long break but you never know when we will come out of hibernation. There is talk about doing a project that will include unreleased music, video and photos from our 8 years touring and recording. Until that time I keep myself busy writing and recording with a friend of mine Genny Heart. We have some super rough demos up on Myspace, check them out at HYPERLINK "http://www.myspace.com/freetwobirds"http://www.myspace.com/freetwobirds.
REAX: What has been your greatest success professionally and musically?
RI: Greatest success professionally would have to be the label as a whole and everything that it represents. Being able to sign bands and release records is an amazing accomplishment. I feel lucky to have had this opportunity and do not take it for granted. Musically speaking I have tremendous pride for all 4 of theLINE's studio records. Those four records represent different times in my life and the emotions that go along with those times. It's awesome to look back and have those emotions documented in song, that is my greatest success musically.
REAX: What are you listening to right now?
RI: There are so many but the ones that stand out to me are; Silversun Pickups, Seawolf, Birdmonster, Viva Voce, ASG, Goons of Doom, Valient Thorr and Birds of Avalon. I have also been spinning some older records by Seaweed, Minus the Bear and my all time favorite band Chokebore.
REAX: What was your experience like at the Orlando Surf Expo?
RI: Surf Expo is like a different world. It's refreshing to leave southern California and go literally nuts for a few days. I was very happy with our presence and performance at Surf Expo. Having Valient Thorr and Goons of Doom both performing live in the convention and showcasing them on Friday night at the Back Booth was all time. I have not been to Surf Expo for a few years and going back reminded me of my touring days with theLINE. Showing up in a strange town, staying up late, wearing the same clothes for a week straight, that is what I think of when I think of Surf Expo. Good times and good friends.
