G. Love and the Special Sauce
from volume 01 issue 05 // Katie Boatman
It was, yet another, rainy night in Tampa Bay as G. Love and Special Sauce took the stage at Jannus Landing. It was also forever and an hour ago later than when we all thought they were going to take the stage. No worries though, I was being heavily entertained by the heavy volume of puking females scattered about. Nothing makes time go by fast like the sound of light-weight, beer drinking amateurs puking their guts out. No, seriously, I witnessed three separate puking girls within arms length, in no less than 45 minutes. It was wildly entertaining and perhaps one of the top five reasons I love rock shows. Anyway, G love and Special Sauce rushed the stage with a vengeance. They started the show with all the angst and stored up energy that builds during the end of a tour.
The band began one of the last shows of their month long tour with an energetic performance, hitting all the crowd favorites like, I Can’t Go Back To Jersey. G. Love, even threw some Hip-Hop affection around by shouting out things like, “Take money” and “Get money”, to get the crowd pumped. The crowed was indeed pumped; everyone seemed to know the words to pretty much every song. The music provided hip swinging dance beats and long jazzy instrumentals. G. Love bounced around the stage energetically, all the while switching from harmonica to lead guitar. It was exhausting just watching him go. He even carried the mic stand around for a good portion of his performance, which I feel added to his swagger just fine. I have to admit that before this show I knew very little about G Love and Special Sauce, but I did find the show to be easy to groove to.
With a beer in hand and Friday night energy, it was easy to see why so many adoring G. Love fans packed themselves into Jannus Landing. Despite a week of rain drenching everything in sight, G Love and Special Sauce fans in Tampa Bay and St. Pete managed to look past a lot of rain and bad weather and enjoy the show. It’s easy to do when a concert delivers a groovy vibe and entertaining musical stylings.
