The Brass Mug

The truth is that no one really wants to play at The Brass Mug. But the reality is that if you're a startup musician, this is the one place everybody cuts their teeth on. Known for extremely loud shows of the metal variety, The Mug is an absolute dive and fits perfectly with the hardcore scene. The progressive rock group e11th Hour, performed here last month and their heavily layered sound of digital distortion and pulsating bass drums never clashed with the Mug's biker-bar appeal.
It takes a certain breed to frequent this joint and tolerate the excessive volume as well as some of the more unrefined acts, which the Mug seems to be very forgiving in that respect. However, e11th Hour performed like seasoned veterans. They set up quickly and played as if the place was packed when actually only a handful of patrons remained to watch the final act. It was an efficient set where songs followed one after another without any on-stage nonsense or technical difficulties. "Some times the smaller the show, the more personal it is, obviously bigger feels better but we put the same passion into every show...if we can move one person, that's all that counts," said their drummer, Paul Dellaero.
Passion is something novel in long-distance relationships but e11th hour manages to play tight sets even though the group is spread out over 250 miles, leaving few opportunities to prepare for gigs. Three quarters of e11th Hour, bassist Luis Rodriguez, guitarist Dee Blume and singer/guitarist Joe Baldelli, live in Fort Lauderdale; while Dellaero, resides here in Wesley Chapel. "It's really tough living 4 hours away. We use the internet to record parts, sending them back and forth until we complete a song; doing it this way gives each member quality time to create their part and that fills the chemistry of our band well," said Dellaero.
You can check out e11th Hour on this year's Thrash-N-Bash tour at various Florida cities. Their CD, Some Shadows Cast Farther Than Others, will soon be released. For schedules and more information, go to www.myspace.com/e11thhour.
