De La Soul at the Network

De La Soul at the Network

from volume 01 issue 12 // Katie Boatman

GwanMassive, Tampa's up and coming musical montage, opened up the much anticipated De La Soul show with performances by The Rukus, Breakdown and Ranmecca, Tribal Style, and a collaboration known as the Gwanheads. DJ's Ranmecca and The Crate Brothers played records and got heads right for the vibey and energetic Hip Hop to follow. Then De La Soul, The Grammy award winning Hip Hop legends, stormed the stage at Network in Ybor City in a furry of bouncing energy. De La Soul are known for the song "Me, Myself and I" (see 98.7 old school lunch, circa, all the time), making socially conscious music, and preaching peace. De La have been dubbed as "hippies" amongst certain critics. I gotta say though, they seem to embrace that title and respond with a live performance packed with in-your-face, crowd pumping, club shaking, head bobbing, Hip Hop funkiness. One of my favorite things about De La Soul is their multifarious sampling. They have a no holds bar approach to beat making, and record sampling that really turns me on. Plugs One, Two and Three entertained the crowd with jokes and antics throughout the night. They demand crowd participation, especially on tracks like "Oooh" and "Stakes Is High". The trio made sure to shout out much love to late, great producer and friend J. Dilla. After bouncing to a wide range of hits, from Albums 3 Feet High And Rising and Grind Date, one of their latest, the guys were sweaty and pooped. They literally made the club shake to its core. The energy and vibey beats riddled through Network and kept most people dancing. DJ Ranmecca and The Crate Brothers eased the masses into the night with groovy records and Ranmecca's brilliant scratching. The vibe was nice.
