Being on tour seems like the life, but for Brand New front man Jesse Lacey, it means no alcohol, no dairy and no sugar. Contrary to what fans hear, Lacey says he has a weak voice and has to refrain from indulging in anything acidic while on tour. “It’s hard,” he says “cause I love a good milkshake.”
But his diet doesn’t stop him from making the most of the shows. At Jannus Landing Jesse could be seen roaming the crowd before the show wearing various ear flap hats and making sporadic appearances on stage with opening acts Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine to jam out for a few songs.
Once Brand New hit the stage the sold out venue was packed and the vastly juvenile appetites were ready to swallow the indignant screams of Brand New’s emo rock melodies. BN performed crowd favorites “Jesus Christ” and “I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light,” and gave adequate play to all three of their albums. Their sound remained fluid throughout despite repeated technical difficulties on stage (Jesse called them “gremlins”). The expected crowd surfing and moshing ensued and by the end everyone was high on energy (amongst other things) with the opening acts joining in for a couple of songs and Jesse’s seemingly show favorite, mashing his guitar strings against the stage pole. The energy was so high that once the stage vacated, fans didn’t budge for 15 minutes, bereft without one more song.
Lacey spends an hour after each show not talking. It’s his way of cooling down his voice to preserve it. He was the last of the band to appear two hours after the set ended with about 15 fans remaining to get cell phones and memorabilia signed. The vagrants outside soon accosted Jesse and instead of giving them money, he made them some sandwiches on the bus and proceeded to help one of them fix his bike. Displeased with Jesse’s service, the bum exclaimed (not knowing who Jesse was), “Man, don’t quit your day job.” We all laughed. Yes Mr. Lacey, after the killer show tonight, we all want you to keep your day job.
